An early U-Thong period piece carved from this rich, warm sandstone is exceptionally rare. Most surviving statues from this era and style are cast in bronze, making a well-preserved stone carving like this a true museum-quality masterpiece.

Important 16C U-Thong Sandstone Buddha # B02-30

CAT NO: B02-30 DESCRIPTION:The Buddha is depicted standing with his right hand raised, palm outward. This is the Abhaya Mudra, traditionally interpreted in this specific context as "stopping the relatives from fighting" (Ham Yati). The visual presence of that raised hand, combined with the sheer weight of the 30+ kilogram sandstone, carries a massive emotional impact. It evokes an immediate feeling of sanctuary and reassurance, as if the statue itself has the power to quiet chaos, dispel fear, and settle conflict in whatever space it commands.
PERIOD: Early 16th century COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: U-Thong, Thailand CONSTRUCTION: The U-Thong style is famous for its unique blend of Khmer (Angkor) and early Thai influences. This is perfectly captured in the square, strong jawline, distinct band tracing the hairline, and intense, introspective facial features. Carved from solid stone, it doesn't just look peaceful; it looks impenetrable and absolute. It evokes a feeling of ultimate strength, grounding, and spiritual law.
RARITY AND CONDITION:Extremely rare, good condition, some possible cleaning / restoration, expected day to day wear (see photos)
PROVENANCE: Acquired from a Thai collector EVALUATION APPRAISAL: The natural, warm red-and-amber tones of the sandstone give the statue an organic, living energy. What makes the mood of this piece even more breathtaking is the remnants of its original craftsmanship, the subtle, historic traces of gold leaf and ruby lacquer resting on the top. The way the light catches these ancient textures evokes a feeling of stepping into a lost royal treasury or a sacred mountain cave temple from five centuries ago.
It is an imposing, deeply regal piece that doesn't just sit in a room; it entirely defines the energy of the space around it. A very impressive, museum quality piece, with stunning workmanship and beautiful detail and original gold and ruby on top.An imposing piece with very strong presence
