DESCRIPTION: "Receiving alms from the monkey king" In art history, it was found that the sitting alms-giving posture came before the standing alms-holding posture. The reason is that the receiving alms-giving posture is one of the 8 ancient Buddha images of India from the Gupta period (9th-12th Buddhist century).

The sitting postures include sitting with the legs dangling and sitting in the diamond meditation posture. Note that the alms bowl is very small and can be supported with one hand, without having to stand and hold it.

The receiving alms-giving posture from the monkey king is considered the origin of the blessing posture in later eras because after receiving food, one must give blessings and extend loving-kindness to the animals. It is strange that in India, there are no standing Buddha images holding alms bowls.
