Burmese Teak Carving of Golden Swan (Hintha) on Stand
Myanmar is known for its rich history, and the many grand pagodas and stupas.
You’ll notice that some of the most commonly seen vessels are containers for offerings to temples, which are called "hsun-ok". One especially nice one we have at ACM is in shape of a hintha bird (also called hamsa)! It's decorated with relief-moulded lacquer, which is covered in gold and inlaid with glass and mirror fragments.
This opulent decoration is typical of the “Mandalay style”, popular during the Konbaung period (1752–1885). The sophistication of Burmese lacquerwork is on full display here. Ceremonial Hintha-bird vessel. Myanmar, Mandalay, late 19th century.
A very impressive, almost museum quality piece, with stunning workmanship and beautiful detail. Some natural wear and tear but still exceptional.
